Church, ecumenical group hold 911 gathering for peace (Sept. 10–11)
Church, ecumenical group hold 911 gathering for peace (Sept. 10–11)
(GAINESVILLE, Fla.) Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville and the Gainesville Interfaith Forum invite members of all faiths and the community to the Trinity campus Sept. 10, 6–9 p.m., for an opportunity to get to know each other better. The evening will feature arts and educational crafts, cultural displays, food from various regions of the world, and a time of prayer for peace, understanding and hope. Guests are also invited to a time of prayer Sept. 11, 8:30–10:30 a.m., in remembrance of those who died in the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001. The ecumenical gathering is in response to plans by the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville to host an International Day of Burning the Qur’an Sept. 11. “The time for silence has passed, and the time for Christians to speak has come,” said the Rev. Dan Johnson, senior pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church. “There should be no doubt around the globe that the Christian Church does not condone or support such an action. To remain silent would mean complicity to a terrible wrong.” More information is available at http://tiny.cc/tb3cj. full story>

Guide helps foster clergy, laity accountability
Guide helps foster clergy, laity accountability
A revised edition of “Watching Over One Another In Love: A Wesleyan Model for Ministry Assessment” incorporates material based on feedback received since the book was first released in 2007. Drawing on Wesleyan themes of grace and responsibility, the book provides step-by-step guidance for creating a covenant-based ministry assessment process that holds people accountable for fruit-bearing faith, while enabling the experience of ministry assessment to be edifying for both church and pastor. This book is useful for staff-parish relations committees and clergy and lay leadership teams in United Methodist congregations; bishops, cabinets and district superintendents; people pursuing ordained ministry and those mentoring them in the process; and faculty teaching United Methodist polity and pastoral care. The revised edition can be pre-ordered from Cokesbury at http://www.cokesbury.com or 800-672-1789. full story>

Wesleyan leadership conference sparks church heritage revival (Oct.14-16)
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Steve Manskar says The United Methodist Church can experience revival by rediscovering its heritage and the characteristics that set early Methodists apart from other people and religious leaders. Manskar, director of Wesleyan Leadership for the General Board of Discipleship, says such practices as the focus on lay pastoral leadership and class meetings were pretty much “de-emphasized in order to attract people to the church.” The problem was that “it became Methodist in name only. The denomination transformed itself from a missional movement to an attractional church,” says Manskar, who will lead a Wesleyan Leadership Conference Oct. 14-16 in Nashville to help reclaim some of the Wesleyan practices United Methodists need to reach a post-Christian, post-modern world. The cost is $95. Registration details and more information are available at http://tiny.cc/118v0 or http://www.gbod.org/wesleyanleadership. full story>

World Communion Sunday scholarships nurture new leaders (Oct. 3)
Churches have an opportunity to support students and develop new church leaders through World Communion Sunday Oct. 3. One of six churchwide Special Sundays of The United Methodist Church, it provides scholarships for U.S. racial- and ethnic-minority students and international students, both undergraduate and graduate. It is celebrated annually on the first Sunday in October, but churches can celebrate the date at any time. As U.S. demographics continue to change, the church must prepare leaders to serve an increasingly diverse population, and the scholarships funded by World Communion Sunday nurture new leaders for church and society. Jean-Michel Basquin studied at South Dakota State University. Equipped with a doctorate in rural sociology, his goal is to help The Methodist Church of his native Haiti “to shape a better future for the country.” Reflecting on his scholarship, he said, “I can’t be thankful enough. That scholarship is exactly what the church needs to fulfill its global mission. It empowers people so they can empower others.” More information and resources to celebrate the Sunday are available at http://tiny.cc/6dvmv. full story>

Teams from local churches interested in receiving training on early response after a disaster are invited to attend an Early Response Team training Oct. 29 at the Warren W. Willis United Methodist Camp in Fruitland Park.

Attendees will receive a disaster response manual, certification and credentials identifying them as early responders for the Florida Conference. The training will focus on the types, phases and levels of a disaster and explain what is meant by early response. It will also cover spiritual and emotional care, support from the United Methodist Committee on Relief, faith-based response in disaster, and team leadership needs and equipment.
Because this is a specialized training requiring a higher level of expertise and commitment, participants must complete “Community Arise Basic Disaster Ministry Training” before taking Early Response Team training.
