ZEPHYRHILLS — The message of the day was simple — just because your church has a large percentage of older adults, it does not mean it is dying. That, and the premise that older adults should be embraced in the church, was the overall theme of the South Central District's recent workshop on ageism.

A task force from The United Methodist Church’s Council of Bishops spent two days in October starting the process of updating a 21-year old pastoral letter and statement that responded to the threat of nuclear war. Expanding its scope for the post-cold war era, task force members heard testimony from a variety of experts on global warming, nuclear weapons, global security and pandemic poverty and disease.

Under the conference insurance program, churches are covered regardless of whether or not they pay their premiums. The Florida Conference is known for starting new churches in record numbers in the United States. This year alone, the conference’s New Church Development committee is anticipating starting 22 new congregations. But that’s all in Florida. If you add the one being started in Mississippi, that number is 23.
