VIERA — Residents of Clewiston and nearby communities may be battered after Hurricane Wilma, but they certainly aren't beaten, thanks to the many city, non-profit and church groups working hard to clean up and begin rebuilding.
United Methodists in the South West District of the Florida Conference are a key part of those efforts. full story>

VIERA — Eighty years ago in West Palm Beach, Bill Barnes' grandparents spent three days feeding soup to orphans who'd been transported from Miami to West Palm Beach in boxcars after a large hurricane hit the Miami area.
Around the same time, the family helped place the cornerstone of the former First United Methodist Church of West Palm Beach, now in a different location and renamed the United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches.
Today, Barnes helps coordinate disaster relief efforts for the South West District of the Florida Conference and is playing a big role in ongoing recovery efforts in Clewiston after Hurricane Wilma. full story>

WEST PALM BEACH — An assembly line formed in the four-bay garage of United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches. Flood buckets filled with supplies passed from one hand to the next.
"Just keep swinging," volunteers called.
The high winds and heavy rains Hurricane Wilma brought Oct. 24 are gone, but the devastation remains. In Palm Beach County, hundreds of thousands of people lost power. Many have been turning to ministries and churches like United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches for help. full story>

PEMBROKE PINES — On a sunny afternoon four days after Hurricane Wilma barreled through their South Florida community, Tristan James and his neighbors were all doing the same thing — sweeping, repairing and cleaning up.
One thing he wasn't doing was securing his damaged roof. It was already covered by a blue tarp, one he had gotten from nearby Epworth United Methodist Church.
Members of the church gave away a supply of tarps that had been donated by other churches in the Florida Conference. The free gift made a big impression on James and other neighbors who had known little about the church they pass almost every day. full story>

LAKELAND — A visit to the Florida Conference Center in Lakeland would reveal organized chaos as staff compete with painters and carpenters for time and space. Offices are once again being reconfigured to better accommodate department workflow, consolidate workspace and better utilize resources. full story>

FLORIDA CITY — About 95 kids sat scattered on the lawn between the Branches building and Florida City United Methodist Church. They were listening to Stacey Morales tell the story of the Good Samaritan.
"Think of something you'd want someone to do for you, then go do it for someone else," she said. "Can you do that?"
Morales was challenging the youth to help someone affected by Hurricane Wilma — to pick up shingles off someone's yard or talk to someone who might be lonely after being without power for days.
It was a timely lesson during a week when people were helping them and their families cope after the storm. full story>

WEST PALM BEACH — As Israelis completed their withdrawal from the Gaza strip, an interfaith group from the United States made a historic trip to the Middle East.
The Rev. David McEntire, senior pastor of United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches, was one of 15 Protestant pastors and 10 Jewish leaders who participated in the weeklong journey last September. full story>

LAKELAND — 2005 remains on track to be a very strong year in terms of Florida Conference finances, according to Treasurer Randy Casey-Rutland.
"Giving to the conference in a variety of ways, which would be through apportionments ... or designated giving, is significantly above recent years," Casey-Rutland said. full story>

An e-Review Commentary By the Rev. John Hicks
Artists, when painting, do not always stand at an arm's length from their canvas. The best artists know they need to occasionally step back from their work and view it from a distance. They need to see how their thousands of small brush strokes are fitting together to produce the overall result.
Likewise, our perspective on life is much improved if sometimes we can step back and see the whole picture. full story>
