The sky turned a dark, glowing red in the middle of the afternoon as ash more than a foot across floated through the air, covering everything in sight.
Members of Siloam United Methodist Church in rural Columbia City in the Florida Conference’s North West District warily watched as fires spreading south from the Okefenokee Swamp neared their community. full story>

LAKELAND — The task of transforming The United Methodist Church does not rest solely in the hands of clergy. It should be a shared goal between both clergy and laity.

LAKELAND — Of the 66 people elected earlier this month to represent the Florida Conference at the 2008 General and Southeastern Jurisdictional conferences, either as delegates or reserves, about half served as delegates to the denominational and regional conferences in 2004.
The 2008 delegation is also about as equally diverse as the 2004 delegation in terms of the ethnicities represented, with a similar, nearly even split between men and women.
There is one notable difference, however. More delegates to the upcoming conferences are younger than 30. full story>

LAKELAND — The blaring sounds of the rock band U2 are an unusual way to start worship, but the U2charist service at the recent Florida Annual Conference Event did feature the band’s music and was anything but usual for a conference event. full story>

LAKELAND — Some things may ebb and flow in today’s society, but one thing remains constant — the desire of youth to be heard, understood and valued.

LAKELAND — The racial slur someone wrote on the marquee at Cason United Methodist Church earlier this year was intended to discourage and divide.
Instead, it helped fuel a new season of empowerment and unity for people of faith within the Delray Beach community and offered lessons for Florida Christians as a whole. full story>

Sheila Oakley speaks with deep conviction when she talks about her church’s “blankets” partnership with Army medic specialist Steve Stephens.
Stephens is equally impassioned about his appreciation for what Oakley and her church, First United Methodist Church of Lake Wales, have done to help him put new blankets into the hands of needy Iraqi families. full story>
