The Rev. Dr. Robert Bushong will always remember the chance lunch encounter he had at the 2004 General Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.

As delegates searched for seats at a local sandwich shop, a small group from the Florida Conference delegation offered a seat to the Rev. Paul Matheri, a delegate from the Naivasha District of Kenya in the East Africa Annual Conference. After the meal, the men exchanged business cards and e-mail addresses and promised to keep in touch.

They did, and a friendship that transcends culture and several continents blossomed.

TALLAHASSEE — For Florida United Methodists, children are a priority.

At the 17th Conference Table last January, the social issues that surround and impact children were chosen as a common social witness on which the conference would focus.

That witness came to fruition the last week of March, as United Methodists joined hundreds of people gathered in Tallahassee at the state capitol for “Children’s Week.”

JACKSONVILLE — Members and friends of River of Life United Methodist Mission near Jacksonville were warned: Do not come to church Feb. 25.

In fact, the more than 200 people who would normally attend worship on a Sunday morning were told to stay away. Instead of sitting in worship and “doing church,” they were invited to “be the church.”

Clergy are called to care for others, but who cares for them when they need help?

The Florida Conference has put a plan into place to help fill that need, and retired and active clergy across the conference’s East Central District are leading the way in ministering to those who spend countless hours ministering to others.

An e-Review Commentary
By the Rev. Dr. James Harnish

T.S. Eliot asked: “Where shall the word be found, where will the word/Resound? Not here, there is not enough silence.”

It’s hard to know what to say that has not already been said about this tragedy. It may be only in silence that we can begin to know the wide range of emotions that surge within us.

Jesus’ way of giving is so much more than our way. Jesus says go well above and beyond expectations when it comes to the generosity of your life. At Beach United Methodist Church, an unfolding story of generosity has captured our attention, gripped our hearts and taught us a “higher road” of giving.

LAKELAND — When looking out over the attendees gathered at pretty much any annual conference across the country it’s not unusual to see mostly older members.

But at the 2007 Florida Annual Conference Event, youth and young adults will have a heightened presence, thanks to a mandate from last year’s gathering that said their involvement is a priority.
