ANDALUSIA, Ala. — In a call to action for United Methodists to respond to the plight of children and the impoverished, Bishops Larry M. Goodpaster and Timothy W. Whitaker of the Alabama-West Florida and Florida Conferences, respectively, participated in a news conference April 7 at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee.
The news conference drew attention to the Florida Children's Summer Nutrition (CSN) Bill, also called the Ms. Willie Ann Glenn Act, and highlighted the release of the Florida State Hunger Report. full story>

TAMPA — The number of Florida Conference teams traveling to Cuba is increasing as Florida United Methodists continue their commitment to being in relationship with their Cuban counterparts. That relationship is part of the Cuba/Florida Covenant, which was signed by representatives of both the Florida Conference and The Methodist Church of Cuba in 1997. Since then, Methodists have traveled to and from the United States and Cuba to learn about each other's way of life and support each other spiritually. full story>

Coming from the mountains and coal mining country of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., my trip to Cuba was a unique experience. Even though I have traveled in numerous parts of the world and the United States, it was still quite different to see how Cubans in our sister churches live. full story>

Returning to Cuba for the 5th time (as part of the second of two caravans from the Tampa District visiting sister churches in October 2004) after leaving my native land in 1961 was an emotional, as well as a spiritual, wonderful experience. By now, visiting our sister churches in Niquero and Media Luna is like going to visit our families for Pete, my husband, and me. full story>

LAKELAND — Margaret Harris didn't know what to do after Hurricane Jeanne left her roof in serious disrepair, but her daughter did.
Harris's daughter contacted the Florida Conference Storm Recovery Center (SRC) in Lakeland. A work team soon arrived at Harris's Inverness home, and the work began.
"They did a great job," said Harris, a widow. "They were wonderful. They were kind. They brought my mail in to me. They spoiled me to death."
Harris is only one of thousands of people the SRC has helped in the wake of the hurricanes that rocked the state last fall. full story>
