LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. — Most people agree: the immigration system in the United States is a mess and needs to be reformed. That, however, is where the agreement ends. How to fix the problem is the hard part.
United Methodists from around the country gathered in early February at Lake Junaluska Assembly in the mountains of western North Carolina to explore how the church could respond to the issue of immigration. full story>

Although participants attending the “Shaping a Common Social Witness” Conference Table Jan. 27 did not identify a specific strategy, they did agree conference churches should collectively focus on the needs of children. full story>

The United Methodist Church has a rich history of ministry to children around the world. According to the church’s Social Principles, “Children have the right to food, shelter, clothing, health care and emotional well-being.”
Even as Florida Conference Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker and other religious leaders participate in a press conference at the state capitol March 27 to encourage political leaders and Floridians to ensure a high quality of life for children, churches around the state are already having a positive impact on children in their communities. full story>

Esther Kelly never uses the word “can’t” in her vocabulary, and she doesn’t allow her Prime Time After-School Program students to use it either.
At 56, she says she keeps her can-do attitude at all times, despite being diagnosed in 2000 with non-Hodgkins bone cancer, an incurable form of the disease. Meanwhile, about 34 elementary-aged children depend on her leadership at Prime Time to help them face their own challenges. full story>

Donna Ratzlaff says her organization saw a huge increase in the number of homeless people needing a meal during the last months of last year. The number of calls for rent and utility payments tripled.
“The demand always increases in the winter months because Florida is such a wonderful place to come to, but the number of people that have shown up has almost doubled,” she said. “That’s a phenomenon we haven’t seen at that level.” full story>
