The Rev. Sarai Maiselle says it really pays to have an early breakfast with a group of friends when you attend the annual gathering of Florida United Methodists each June. You’re sleepy enough to allow the Holy Spirit to do its work.
And that's what happened. Maiselle had an idea for a Christian café, but didn’t really know what to do with it until two years later when the people who could do the ministry and the church came together. full story>

Local churches and members of the Florida Conference storm recovery ministry have once again swung into high gear to help people recover from a major storm.
Severe thunderstorms moved across the central part of the state early in the morning Feb. 2, spawning high winds and at least one tornado that caused the deaths of 20 people and damaged thousands of homes. Lake, Volusia, Sumter and Seminole counties were declared disaster areas, and the state’s new governor, Charlie Crist, visited affected areas Feb. 3 assessing damages. full story>

Carl Gordon and his fiancé were going to be married in eight weeks. Now, his family is preparing for a funeral instead of a wedding.
Gordon, 20, was killed Feb. 2 when a tornado ripped through his Lady Lake neighborhood. The tornado was part of a severe weather system that began moving through the Central Florida area shortly after midnight that day. The storm killed 20 people and damaged thousands of homes. full story>

THE VILLAGES — The Rev. Dan Jackson joked with his congregation that he had prepared an outstanding sermon for that morning’s worship service, one of his all-time best, but God had other words for him to say after the previous Friday’s storm.
His message was simple. When wrestling with the questions of why some were spared and others weren’t or where was God “at a time like this” he said, “Don’t go there.” It’s enough to know God is always with us. full story>

FRUITLAND PARK — When visitors attend your church on a Sunday morning, do they feel welcomed? Are they greeted in the parking lot and shown exactly how to get into the church? Maybe they are escorted to a seat by an usher and introduced to other people sitting around them. Do you encourage church members to sit beside them so they aren’t alone?
Learning how to be a welcoming and hospitable congregation were the goals of the regional Igniting Ministry training event held Jan. 14 at the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) in Fruitland Park. More than 350 Florida Conference laity and clergy attended. full story>

TAMPA — Panravee Vongjaroenrat can’t explain why United Methodists do what they do when it comes to starting Justice for Our Neighbors clinics throughout the United States, but she’s glad the Florida Conference is committed to the ministry.
An immigration attorney and director of legal services for Justice for Our Neighbors, a national program of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Vongjaroenrat was one of several guests who participated in the Jan. 27 grand opening celebration of the conference’s second immigration clinic. full story>
